Hi and welcome to the new website for the Australian Council of Local Government or ACLG.
I'm Anthony Albanese. I'm the Federal Local Government Minister.
Over the next few weeks we will be providing further information on this website about our plans for the inaugural ACLG meeting to be held in Parliament House on the 18th November.
This unprecedented meeting will bring together Australian and local governments to share ideas to improve the quality of life in our local communities.
It's a fact that local councils and shires are the level of government closest to the community.
They provide essential services and infrastructure - from local roads, sporting grounds, community halls and libraries to child care, water and environmental services.
In return, the Australian Government is supporting local councils and shires by providing $1.9 billion in financial assistance grants and $355 million through the Roads to Recovery program this year alone.
We recognise that Australia is facing new challenges which will require new solutions.
Uncertain global economic circumstances, climate change and neglected infrastructure networks underline the need for the Australian and local governments to continue to work together - but in an improved way.
Strengthening the bonds between our two levels of government is key to ensuring our communities are prepared to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.
To do this, we need to be in the same room, working side-by-side.
This historic one-day meeting will the next important step in the Australian Government's plan to forge this new relationship with local government.
I look forward to seeing you there and to it being a great success.
