Building Resilience in Local Communities
The Australian Council of Local Government (ACLG) Plenary Meeting was held at Parliament House, Canberra, on Thursday 25 June 2009, and was preceded by a Welcome Dinner on Wednesday 24 June 2009.
The theme for the meeting was “Building Resilience in Local Communities” in order to engage with current or emerging issues facing local government, including the challenges posed by the global economic recession.
The meeting consisted of an opening plenary session that involved a few short presentations to set the challenges for the day. This was followed by an extended breakout session where mayors, ministers and parliamentary secretaries shared ideas, practices and policies about how to work together to strengthen our communities. The meeting then concluded with a short plenary session.
The Prime Minister announced a further $220 million boost for the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program and $25 million for the Local Government Reform Fund.
